Mike Donello & The New Essentials | "Greedy Vampires"

NoteWorthy Music is pleased to premiere Mike Donello & the New Essentials’ new single, “Greedy Vampires,” from their self-titled album. We love the juxtaposition of the lively sound with the contrasting darker lyrics. “Greedy Vampires” is an unexpected and fun offering for October from a solid Austin-based band.

We asked Mike and the Essentials if they would share a little about themselves and “Greedy Vampires.” Here is what they had to say:

From Mike Donello & the New Essentials:

The New Essentials started officially in 2018 primarily as a cover band for private shows, local residencies, and corporate events. Mike Donello and bandmate Matt Creaton would put together a rotating cast of musicians to cover various shows they were offered, but when people would come up and ask, “What is your band name and how do we find you?”, we never had a good answer, or it was so discombobulated that it wasn’t helping to market ourselves well.

We were looking for something new, something organic yet something essential. Since each show is always a new experience from new songs to rotating members, Mike pitched the name “The New Essentials,” and from that moment on, the name stuck.

In 2020, Mike wanted to start releasing his original tunes that he had newly written along with a few the band had learned over the last year or so. He decided to call the 2020 EP and future December 2021 album exactly what it was: A record of songs by Mike Donello done with his Austin, Texas, cast of musicians and band known as “The New Essentials.”

Our October release, “Greedy Vampires” at its core is about the greedy thoughts that everyone can have and how we try to get by and survive to seek generosity. Basically the tune at its core has a fun, happy groove but a slightly darker opposing lyrical theme. It also can be about how even the heroes need to take a day off.
